Record with Fn hold and release

With the default Fn shortcut in Mac 0.3.6, hold for about 0.3 seconds to start recording and release to finish. A short tap opens an unread completion or toggles the panel. Local transcription produces text for review; release does not send it.

Recording without opening the main panel#

Mac 0.3.6 uses a separate compact overlay for recording and transcription. In a CueSpec topic, the text returns to that topic's draft. For another app, insertion is attempted only when the editable field selected at recording start can be confirmed. If it cannot, the text stays available for copying; this is not universal app compatibility.

A short tap of the default Fn shortcut opens an unread completion or toggles the panel. Custom shortcut settings can differ. Cross-app real-microphone and insertion use was not freshly validated for this release.

Use the route#

Prepare a recognized task context and confirm voice readiness. Hold the default Fn key until recording starts (about 0.3 seconds), speak a concise instruction and release. Wait for transcription, read the resulting text and make any corrections before delivery.

Start with a normal-volume, non-sensitive sentence. Once it works, evaluate softer speech separately. This avoids confusing first-use permission problems with whisper performance.

Check the result#

The development record includes real-user acceptance of hold/release recording, transcription, draft insertion and deliberate sending. That acceptance does not automatically cover cancellation, selected-text replacement, recording during a task switch or every alternative shortcut setup.

If the trigger does not start capture, use the shortcut troubleshooting page. If recording starts but text is missing, check input and model readiness. If text appears correctly, confirm the conversation before sending. Keep those stages separate so a delivery problem does not lead you to change a working microphone configuration.
